the worst fever of the year.. perhaps the decade.

being sick wasn't on my list anytime this month or even this year. I didn't prepare my schedule for a 'sick day' or anything related to medical rest. Only the medical checkup which was scheduled by the uni to check if I've got some serious disease, illness and even whether i'm pregnant. Well, I was totally caught off guard after a bball outing with Yewen and gang and Shiva. The next day, I felt as though i was sitting in a merry-go-round, going round n round... my eyes were heavy and I felt extremely nauseous.

It took me the whole day to realise that I was having fever and in fact, high fever. My stubborness is always the cause of my sufferings.. this time, a prolonged bout of fever and cough for an entire week. I was having the high fever for almost 4 days in a row which made it extremely risky coz if anything goes wrong, I can safely say I've 'fried' my brains.

I missed a couple of stuff... Vader outings, my medical checkup with the school, movie - Fantastic Four... tuition and even a whole lot of fun.. coz I have been sleepin in for the past whole week... sleeping my life away i felt. Haha... but in fact, i think this is actually the first time i have ever rested so so much and well after the As and that though the illness came at a weird time, i really thanked God for it. ^.^

Matriculation is tml... so is my medical check up. Going to cram both outings at the same time. Going to get my matric card!!! so exciting!!! haha... but i'm more excited to get my ezlink card... gone are the days of paying expensive fares... My ALLOWANCE would be back! gosh.... so happy tooo.... hehe... But i've really got to save every single cent la... must be thrifty u know.. haha... no more shopping sprees already.. so sad.... hai.. ok la.. I'LL BE GD!!! ^.^

Will update u guys more school stuff soon..

don't give up on me..

"Don't give up on me" is one phrase that i believe most people would like to say those who have utterly just given up on them. Well, this phrase is sympathetic yet true to those who have been shunned by society for just their flaws.

Recently, my job required me to interact with youngsters and educate them the English language. As most people would say, English is a difficult language to master.. given it's many principles and large vocabulary. Well, as my job required actual teaching, i had to do my part well and besides, i couldn't just waste other people's time away, can i?

The bunch of youngsters i got were a fun loving bunch. Too fun-loving in fact. They are rule breakers and at the same time heart breakers. It was difficult to get them to settle down and listen moreover just to interact with me. I felt as though I was in a remand centre where all the black sheep of society were said to hang out. Vulgarities were served without a pinch of remorse and full of disrespect. But i couldn't be bothered. I just taught. I loved the people who listened because they were precisely the ones i thought who were oppressed by the majority (A gang of boys). To me, they seemed to be silently screaming, "Don't care about them. Just teach. I wanna listen. So teach." I just felt the need to share my knowledge too.. whether they wanted to listen or not.

The power of a smile is indeed the most effective ice breaker between people and strangers. It was the power of the smile that made me realise that the youngsters i taught and deemed "hopeless" were actually in need of help. Not academically (because they couldn't really be bothered if they understood their syllabus) but in need of someone to care, love and at bare minimum entertain them. They were restless for a reason and chose to be noisy because they needed someone to fuss over them. Besides, they liked the attention from people for being notorious because all the attention in an educational institution is always given to the best students of the cohort and the high achievers. The infamous reputation that they have, makes them unique throughout the area.

They are indeed screaming, "Don't give up on me" and even "I don't look like I care but i really do". The day i left the job.. was due to committments to Uni life and that i felt that many students whom i have taught all felt sad that i was leaving, or so i thought. One of them said, "You're leaving already? But you're so nice and we like your lessons. You are quitting because of us is it?" It really saddened me that they felt that people were walking out of them because they just weren't good enough. I reassured them and gave them my best wishes. Hoping that at least, i changed them a little.

The sweetest thing that anyone has ever said to me... which i will never forget is actually by one of the youngsters called Benny. He said, "Teacher, I may be rebellious but I respect you for all that you have done for our class. Remember that." It was just all i needed to know that I didn't waste my time and that I didn't sacrifice my tuition students' lesson for nothing.

So here's to all the youngsters who know me as "Ms. Tan". Good luck in everything you do. Wherever you may be.
